MCW - Movie you hated the first time you saw it but now you like it.

Hello my turkey/ham/prime rib stuffed loyal readers and welcome to this week's edition of Movie Clip Wednesday.  You hopefully know the history of this weekly meme.  The Omnipotent Boxer began this way back ago (February I think) and somewhere along the way it ended up here where the loyal readers of the drivel have been faithful followers and great participants, despite my sometimes lame themes and last to minute notice.  Despite this, MCW, like Jason from Friday the 13th, does not die.  (Hmmm, a Friday the 13th reference, foreshadowing perhaps?  Nope.  Just a lame attempt at humor. Anyway, how it works is like this: I pick a theme, usually to the chagrin of everyone, you find a clip that matches said theme, put it on your wonderful blog and then post in the comments of this post that you "are up".  We will all come a check it out and give you blog "high fives".  Look under the MCW banner for the following week's theme.  I'll try to have it up by Thursday. Or Friday. Or whenever I get a post from someone saying "what's the theme for next week's MCW".

I have so many great movie recommendations from this meme that I could't watch them all if I met a rich woman who told me to quit my job and "watch those movies you've always wanted to watch.  Oh yes, and work on your golf game".  This isn't meant to discourage anyone from pushing said rich woman my way.  Just sayin.

This week's theme is "movie you hated the first time you saw it but now you like it".  I have a couple of these to choose from but there is one that stands out more than the others.

The first time I tried to watch the movie in question, I was excited.  I loved the previews and the concept.  After 20 minutes of watching, I gave up and was completely disappointed.

When friends Eric and Monika were living with me while they were having their house built, the sequel to said movie came out.  Monika, who is like a sister to me, wanted me to go to the sequel with her.  We share a similar sense of humor and Eric didn't like the first movie as much as she did.  Imagine her dismay when I told her "I fucking hated that movie.  Never finished it."  Shocked would be an understatement at Monika's response.  She couldn't believe A) that I didn't watch it, and B) that I didn't love it.

She insisted that we watch it together.  With her guidance and presence she was confident that I could be turned and that I would learn to like this movie.  We watched together that Saturday night and again before we went to the matinee for the sequel that Sunday afternoon and I loved it. "Liquid hot MAG-MA!"  Yes, I'm talking about Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.  Hard to believe I know.  "Men want to be him, women want to be with him."  Hey, I think they stole that from my memoirs. Wait, what?

Happy MCW.

Insert "Elizabeth Hurley was the hottest woman on the earth at this time" comment here.

"The details of my life are quite inconsequential."

Who did invent the question mark?

Where are the Fembots?
Had the same effect on me when i first saw it. Wasn't till i had the teenage nephews staying over and them playing it on loop that finally saw it as funny!
I'm up with something just a little older...
Thanks Madman.

Oh believe me, my little family went to see this one and two of us were in the floor holding our sides to keep them from splitting with laughter. That British Guy didn't get it at all. Was offended. Took him quite a while to come around to it. Great great take on the theme! I'll be up with my choice in just a while.

Good pick. It's not the movie for everyone, but I'm with Pam, I was laughing hard at the first one (But not the sequels.)

The movie I could not finish and still can't is NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE. I have friends who grew up in that town in Idaho and I still couldn't get through the first 10 minutes. I might give it another try after this week.

I'm up with YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN.

Happy MCW you fabulous host, you!

Oh, Boxer, Im with you on Napoleon Dyamite! I sat down with my teenage son to watch it and he cleared off after 15 minutes. I got to 30 and decided it was more fun watching paint dry.

As to Austin Powers, I find them amusing but certainly not as rave-worthy as most people. It might have something to do with the fact that, one day whilst visiting a local supermarket, one of my children was perusing the dvd stands whilst I queued in the check out. Suddenly a little excited voice shouted above the canned music 'Mum! They've got the spy who shagged me!!!' And everyone turned to stare...

Anyway, Im up... :)

I can't think of a movie that fits the category and YouTube gives me a head-ache. So, i'm NOT up.

I also came up empty this week. Other than a couple movies I was forced to suffer through during film history in high school and later came to appreciate (Citizen Kane, a movie of staggering genius), I rarely change my mind once I make it up about something.

Oh, and I've seen Napoleon Dynamite three times. A work of staggering comedic genius :o)

I have to disagree with you on this one Madman. I thought the whole Austin Powers series was hysterical the first time through. Goldmember was probably the least funny of the three. And like the Bond girls, the Power's girls were all hot; Elizabeth Hurley, Heather Graham and Beyonce all looked great.

I'm up at the Buzzkill with bombers, bikes and babes. I'll be around tonight to visit everyone.

Happy MCW!

Scott Evil: But dad, we just had a breakthrough in group.
Dr. Evil: I had the group LIQUIDATED, you little shit! They were insolent!

Bwahahaha - love this movie.

Sorry I'm late to get back. Pool league went a little long and I was ready for bed when I got home.

Princess,
Fembots indeed. I'll take two.

Pam,
There was just something about it that I didn't like the first time. Was watching alone as well.

Boxer,
ND was so funny I saw it in the theater twice. I can't remember the last time I did that. Growing up in small town Montana I could relate. Besides, I am a big fan of ligers and Pedro.

JC,
A big fan of the first one and agree they taper off from there. Especially in the woman department. I love the British lingo Myers uses. "That's just not cricket" Hilarious

Troll,
Somehow, I can believe all of what you wrote.

Moi,
You came up empty? This does surprise me. I think I have an easy one next week.

BK,
They did grow on me now. Goldmember is my least favorite as well but with one of my favorite lines "Carnies. They smell like cabbage"
