If I ever find him

So evidently, my email address was hacked and a bunch of spam was sent through my address. I've taken the advice of Yahoo! on what to do and hope this doesn't happen anymore.

I would like to find this person. I won't describe what I want to do to him ( I believe it is a him, women aren't evil when it comes to things like this, they are only evil when they want to rip your heart out through your lungcage and put it in a blender on puree, but hey, who am I to judge. Maybe I should have called more. Whatever. ) anyway, what I would do involves slitting a very tender portion of his anatomy. I'll leave you with that. My description for what I would do after that, isn't pleasant. 

MCW Favorite movie from the 1950's

Hello and welcome to the however many edition of Movie Clip Wednesday this is.  This week's theme is favorite movie from the 1950's.  MCW founder and regular participant Boxer came up with this week's theme.  Here was the reaction from the throngs of bloggers.

I didn't know how many movies from the Fifties I had seen but turns out there have been more than a couple.  High Noon was one. On the Waterfront, Shane, and Rio Bravo were some others.  All great movies. All way at the top of my favorites list but when I found the movie in this week's clip I knew it was a done deal. The Bridge on the River Kwai isn't so much a war movie as it is a study in the contrast of cultures.  The difference in not just how to lead men, but in what the cultures choose to be valuble.  William Holden is the big star in this along with Alec Guinness, who won the Oscar for Best Actor but to me the man who has always been the star of this movie, gave it the strength to be one of the best ever and had the most complex character as far as dealing with the cultural issues is Colonel Saito playe by the great Japanese born actor Sessue Hayakawa.

Hayakawa came to Hollywood in the 1910's and was one of the top paid actors of the decade, pulling in $200,000.00 in 1919.  That's twice what Will Ferrell should ever be paid.  To me, Saito was dominating in every scene, and when he was in any scene with Guinness it was pure cinema gold.

In my never ending struggle to make sure this blog never rises above mediocrity, I found some funny commercials for your viewing pleasure today.  I'm sure I'm the only one of the band of malcontents who has to work today. I'm only going to work till noon.  It's going to be a busy morning of watching South Park and eating poptarts.  Blueberry.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas and or Hanuka.  I'm ready to kick off the New Year with a blog party at Boxer's place this Friday night.  Until then, we have the last MCW of 2010 to finish up.

When I had favorite foreign actor as a theme way back in the long ago, more than one person said that it was a stretch to consider Michael J. Fox a foreigner, or as Aunty may refer to them a "ferrener" (not close aI know). 

This week I went with an actress that was actually from across the Atlantic to she is definately foreign.  So smart, funny and beautiful.  She'd have me wrapped around her finger until I left the earth.  She's gone by many names.  Sabrina, Eliza and Holly among others.  To me she is just the most beautiful woman I've ever laid eyes on.  I think the thing I admired most about Audrey Hepburn was the fact that she really seemed sincere and genuine in real life.  Like making movies was just this thing she did so that she could give back the world all the wonderful things it had given her.  I don't have a lot of respect for Hollywood but I remember being sad when I heard the announcement of her passing. 

Take a long look you current Hollywood starlets.  It would take far too many of you to count to match the pure beauty and elegance of this one women. Both on screen and off.  Happy MCW.

MCW Favorite Christmas Movie

Merry Christmas fellow bloggers.  Welcome to this week's edition of Movie Clip Wednesday.  This week's theme was quite easy to choose.  Remember how this works.  I give you a theme, you find a movie clip around three minutes long then drop by here and say that you're up and running and we'll all pop over and have a gander.  The magnificent Boxer started this a couple of week's or so ago, maybe longer, anyway we all have to keep it going.

So many good movies to choose from.  I'm not going to lie, I'm expecting a lot of It's a Wonderful Life and a lot of Christmas Vacation clips and that's fine with me.  It will be interesting to see how many blog jinx's there are this week. I went with A Christmas Story.  There  were a number of reasons but I think the biggest was it reminded me of growing up in Malta (wow, what were the odds of that?). Just everything about it, the clothes, having to take care of my brother on the way to school, the way the kids acted in class,  just all of it.  Too many good lines, too many things that happened that made me think of Ralph, Jim and St. Mary's.  The hats, the kid sticking his tongue on a flagpole.  I love this movie.

In my never ending quest to bring you the best of the mundane, I came across this clip.  It's a montage of people saying "we're not in Kansas anymore" and it's really pretty entertaining.  Thanks to The Warming Glow for broadening my horizons.

MCW "Most overrated movie"

Is it time for MCW already?  Wow.  In case anyone may be new here's how it works.  Over here at MRM headquarters a theme is picked and then you find a clip that matches said theme, around three minutes is about right, put it up on your blog and then come over here and tell everyone that you are "up" and ready to roll.  We'll come by and check it out.  Got it?

This week's theme is "Most Overrated Movie".  It's a theme chosen by Boxer, who used to host this little meme.  Remember those days, when the meme was fun and organized? Me too. Oh what the hell! It's surviving ain't it? 

This theme had sooooooooooo many choices.  "Unforgiven" and "Gladiator" immediately came to mind.  Anything with Ben Affleck, DeNiro or Pacino (excluding "The Godfather") Clooney or Keanu.  That's just for warmups.

There has been though, one movie that always stood out to me as being extremely overrated.  I couldn't understand why it was breaking every box office record, especially after I watched it.  The movie of course is "Titanic".  *insert "I already knew how it was going to end" joke here.  Why did I even go?  Why do you think, there was this woman you see and.....................................

MCW Favorite Cop Movie

Okey Dokey.  Narrow theme, then a broad theme. I have good news though. In the spirit of the season, I'm going to name the theme for the next TWO MCW's.  Everyone is going to be really busy with all the stuff that goes on this time of year so here's your assignments.  The theme for 12/15 is "most overrated movie". This is a Boxer suggestion and it's a great one.  The theme for 12/22 is (drum roll please)  favorite Christmas Movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. /standing ovation from the blogosphere ensues.

Here's how it works.  Each week I pick a theme, you go out into the world wide interweb and find an appropriate clip, hopefully less than three minutes long, come over here and post that you are up and we all come and see what it is you've done.  Boxer began this and it's up to us to finish it.  Kind of like how the young kids took the herd the rest of the way to town after John Wayne died in The Cowboys. God did I hate Bruce Dern after that.  I don't know if I watched a movie with him in it for like 10 years.

This week's theme was a suggestion from Five Wood.  With the death of Leslie Nielson, he thought a cop movie theme would be good.  I didn't have anything better so I rolled with it.

MCW - Movie you hated the first time you saw it but now you like it.

Hello my turkey/ham/prime rib stuffed loyal readers and welcome to this week's edition of Movie Clip Wednesday.  You hopefully know the history of this weekly meme.  The Omnipotent Boxer began this way back ago (February I think) and somewhere along the way it ended up here where the loyal readers of the drivel have been faithful followers and great participants, despite my sometimes lame themes and last to minute notice.  Despite this, MCW, like Jason from Friday the 13th, does not die.  (Hmmm, a Friday the 13th reference, foreshadowing perhaps?  Nope.  Just a lame attempt at humor. Anyway, how it works is like this: I pick a theme, usually to the chagrin of everyone, you find a clip that matches said theme, put it on your wonderful blog and then post in the comments of this post that you "are up".  We will all come a check it out and give you blog "high fives".  Look under the MCW banner for the following week's theme.  I'll try to have it up by Thursday. Or Friday. Or whenever I get a post from someone saying "what's the theme for next week's MCW". 

I have so many great movie recommendations from this meme that I could't watch them all if I met a rich woman who told me to quit my job and "watch those movies you've always wanted to watch.  Oh yes, and work on your golf game".  This isn't meant to discourage anyone from pushing said rich woman my way.  Just sayin.

This week's theme is "movie you hated the first time you saw it but now you like it".  I have a couple of these to choose from but there is one that stands out more than the others.

This was a hard one.  So many shitty sequels. I guess one of the rules is that the first movie had to be at least decent.  If it wasn't, what would you have to compare it to.  Caddyshack 2, Teen Wolf 2, Blues Brothers 2000, Godfather 3 (how could the best sequel have one of the worst.  Anyway, I'm late for pool league and when I chose this topic the movie that first came to my mind was Another 48 Hours.  So disappointing on so many levels.  First, no Annette O'Toole.  She didn't get near enough screen time in the first one and none in the second.  A travesty of epic proportions.  Don't think so?  Ask men if they are enough hot redheads in the world and the answer will be a resounding "NO".  The defense rests.  The ridiculous story line, the shitty motorbike scene, the 1/2 shoot out "all the windows everywhere" scene.  I hated all of it.  I guess when it comes to bad sequels, you're anticipation for wanting to see it combined with your disappointment once you do is the biggest factor.  It's kind of like giving an girlfriend a second chance.  You had some good times the last time, it didn't work out the way you wanted but good memories so you get back together and it's a disaster.  Kind of like that.  Not saying that's ever happened to me but I've seen some things.  Happy MCW.

I found this clip on Warming Glow the other day.  At least I think it was Warming Glow.  Anyway, it's two guys arguing on how to do a Michael Caine imitation and as most readers here I think are fans I thought I'd put it up to while the hours away until I post something that most people will not find is worth their time to read.  Kind of like this.

This week's theme was your first date with someone. You're supposed to pick a movie you went to see on a first date with someone, whether it's your soulmate or someone you knew from high school or college.  Looking for some good stories here dear followers of the drivel.  I know I won't be disappointed.
It was a long time ago. We still lived in the big white house on 4th Street. I was probably too young to be going on a date.  As a matter of fact my mom and my prospective date's mom would not have allowed it if they had known but I was determined to go anyway.

This could have gone a lot of ways for me. There are the obvious choices of  Stand by Me and The Breakfast Club.  Ferris Bueller also can fit this category. My unabashed love for Diane Lane could have made me pick The Outsiders or even the underrated Six Pack. However, just picking a movie because I want a Diane Lane clip seems to be a little on the creepy side.  Even for me.  When I saw this category suggested by Moi  I immediately went back to my youth and remembered a great movie.  I remember going to it with Shoey.  It was a big deal because Shoey's dad actually let him go to a movie on a school night.  That just never happened.  The night when we returned home, Shoey's dad asked him what the movie was about.  Shoey replied "It's about a kid who can't figure out what he wants to do with his life and get's a bunch of shit from his dad. Just like me."  Classic answer and I never forgot it.  There are some good Shoey stories out there that all of us Malta boys know about Shoe and his dad that might be worth telling someday.  I'll have to think on that. 

Without further ado, I present to you the 1979 classic Breaking Away.  Enjoy and thanks for playing.  Incidently, Shoey turned out just fine.  Graduated from Montana State and went on to get his MBA at Gonzaga, so, he figured out what he wanted to do.   He made his dad Jim proud before Jim left us much to soon.

It's time once again for the most widely read meme on the blogosphere, Movie Clip Wednesday.   /loyals readers respond by pounding on their space bars.  It's internet applause. Each week loyal readers of the drivel stop by to see what mediocre theme long worded theme I've come up with to challenge their collective movie related skills.

So this week I've chosed favorite foreign actor.  It's a wide range but then we do have some readers who aren't from America and their choices will be interesting.  There are a bunch of great actors.  John Gielgud and Alec Guiness come to mind.  All of the guys who have played James Bond.  How about some great Aussies in Mel Gibson (politics and domestic abuse aside) Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman. 

However, I did say favorite.  My favorite foreign actor is a man almost my own age I grew up with him and one of the most famous characters he portrayed was Alex P. Keaton, the ultra-conservative honors student in Family Ties. Of course I'm talking about Michael J. Fox.  Even though I consider Canada the 51st state, he's still a foreigner.  I'll be honest, until I started typing I was really leaning towards Michael Caine just because he's a great actor with wide range and doesn't seem to make to many bad movies but went with Fox on sentiment. Add the fact that he's only a couple of years older than me and that I could dunk on him (that's not a Parkinsons joke, dude is short0 and we have a winner.

Of course he made millions as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future movie but my favorite Fox roll is Brantley Foster in The Secret of My Success.  Fox was pure comedy gold.  From Family Ties and Spin City to the aforementioned movies along with Doc Hollywood and of course Teen Wolf, Fox was also pretty much box office gold as well.  That he has Parkinsons is truly sad but he still has his mind and his family for which he is thankful.  I'm thankful I was able to enjoy him for as long as he performed.

Movie Clip Wednesday - Best Non-Animated Disney.

Welcome to Movie Clip Wednesday. Boxer continues to shadow box for vodka and is in her busy time so  now I'm driving the bus. "People kept ringing the bell!"

Tried for a tough one this week and it was,but I had one in the back of my mind the entire time. It's good to be the meme master.  Old Yeller  and Swiss Family Robinson are great flicks.  How about the original Parent Trap with Haley Mills who I think was my first big screen crush.  Many, many to choose from but my favorites growing up all had the same lead actor, the same main character, the same basic plot and were set at a place where we all wanted to go to college.  That's right boys and girls, I'm talking about Medfield College and one of the greatest trilogies of all time The Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes, Now You See Him Now You Don't, and lastly The Strongest Man in the World.  Dexter Riley was the hero played by the great and talented Snake Plisken I mean Kurt Russell.

Of the three Now You See Him, Now You Don't is my favorite.  These movies had it all, token you know what guy (not trying to be racist but hey those are the facts), the dumb friend based on Shaggy, cute girl that Dexter could not quite get with, Cesar Romero the bad guy who was always having his plans mess up by those meddling kids.  I love the 70's.



I'm really starting to get pissed off when I find the perfect clip on youtube and it's "disabled by request".  Who would do such a thing?

I have no words why I have never watched this.  I am prepared for the barage of dissappointment that is soon to follow.  *hangs head in shame and slowly walks away from computer as the screen fades to black*

Random Thoughts #22

After a 13 1/2 hour day which did include a couple of good leads and a 520 mile stint behind the wheel, I'm safe and sound here at COTR headquarters.  No work for the rest of the week.  I've poured myself a nice glass of Crown Black and think some blogging is in order.

Sad news from the Center of the Universe.  An early morning fire broke out in Malta and took out a building on Front Street destroying five businesses.  As of this writing, there are no reports of injury which of course is great. The building can be replaced but the lives affected makes my heart heavy.  Saddest of all is that the building housed the local weekly paper, the Phillips County News.  I'm very saddened at the fact that over 100 years of archives were probably lost.  It's Malta.  While I'm sure that many years are on disc or stored electronically somewhere, I have no doubts that many original copies of the PCN are gone forever.  I'll update more when I have more information.

Things that crossed my mind while wondering how the Bobcats will stop Taiwan Jones this weekend.

When GW passed the tax cuts in 2003, liberals complained that they only benefitted the rich.  Now we see that everyone got a tax cut and that if these cuts expire, people making $50,000.00 a year will see their taxes go up $2,900.00 annually.  That's $241.66 that will come out of their paychecks every month. I guess to the liberals, a family making 50k a year is rich. 

I need to get all the gibberish on my digital recorder put into writing.  I have the history of the first seven LBOH's recorded.  Trouble is that I don't have any more room until I have them transcribed.  Biggest problem is that when I'm driving down the road I have great random thoughts and when I sit down at my computer I can't remember any of them.  It sucks getting old.

MCW "The greatest actor of your lifetime."

Welcome to Movie Clip Wendesday.  I'm your humble host while our gloriuos host Boxer takes a well deserved hiatus.  Here's how it works, you look at the theme and find a clip that matches. In the comment section you post that you "are up" and we will all read it and comment.

My choice is Robert Duvall. The best actor I've ever been able to watch.  This guy has range.  Bad guy, I can do it, tough guy, got that too, everyman well I can do that as well.  The thing to me that Duvall has over Pacino and DeNiro ( who always get the accolades as the "greatest") is that he can play whoever, whenever.  Those other two yotes are the SAME guy every fucking movie with different accents. That's all they do. Duvall was Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird a bit part.  He was the notorious Ned Pepper in True Grit he was in the Eagle Has Landed which is the movie Howard Hughes watched over and over until he died.

He was Joe Kidd in Joe Kidd he was the Great Santini.  He played the dirty newspaper guy in my theme "movie you watch when know you want to be alone" (or something like that, The Natural). He was Max Mercer in that movie, the dirty reporter trying to get the shit on Roy Hobbs (played by Rob Redford). He was the crew chief for the dwarf Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder he was in the critically aclaimed and Acadamy Award winning Sling Blade and he carried the robotic Kevin Costner in Open Range.

But of all the characters (including Tom Hagen in The Godfather where he was HOSED for best supporting) my favorite is as Augustus McCrae in Lonesome Dove. Here's my favorite scene from the series. It's way over the three minute alottment but it describes Gus perfectly.  As well as Captain Call play wonderfully by Tommy Lee Jones, the best character in the series.

Thanks for playing.  I'm doing the best I can. We all miss Boxer.  Just go with the flow my dear friends. If you've read the book, you know this scene.  Gus doesn't really have a temper. But when the bartender disses him, he handles it like a champ.  Call knows its coming and steps away, at about the 3:40 mark. He knows Gus is fucking pissed and not to get in the middle of it. It's cinematic beauty on the small screne. Enjoy. "Now besides the whiskey I think we'll require a little respect"  You surly bartender you.  It's where I get my saying "Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago".  God, how many times have any of us wanted to whack a surly bartender? You never had too wack Wee Wille Montgomery.  Nuff said.



Six times nominated for and Academy  Award. He won for Tender Mercies. Four times nominated for an Enmy. He didn't win for Lonesome Dome he did win one for Broken Trail which is AWESOME.
