Coakley at the Bat

COAKLEY AT THE BAT
BY C.G. (with apologies to Ernest Lawrence Thayer )

The outlook was brilliant for Obamacare that day:
The votes stood 59 to 40, the vote in a couple of days.
But one back door deal was made, and then again another
And the people were mumbling louder, even Obama's mother

Behind closed doors there were deals, as sweet as apple pie.
No taxes on union plans, transparency was a big fat lie
The dems were sure they could ram Obamacare right through
Not a thing could really slow them. At least not that they knew.

But the 60th vote was hanging in a very special election,
Martha Coaxley was the dems' great hope, Brown the other selection
Campaigns began in gloom of a dark Cape Cod November
No dem thought it would ever be a campaign to remember

Coaxley sat on her hands as the seat was all but hers
A double-digit polling lead, it certainly wouldn't get worse.
Kennedy had kept the seat and democrat it would stay
Coaxley would easily be elected and vote the Kennedy way.

Teddy had just died, too bad, he was no longer around
He didn't have to answer "how did Mary Jo really drown?"
No the future it was waiting, ever glowing bright
Drunken Teddy's seat would never fall to someone on the right.

Coaxley had practiced her victory speech, once and then again,
"I want it to seem natural" said she "when I finally get the win."
Her opponent took a different route and drove across the state.
"Meet the people, shake their hands" he said "tell them that they're great."

"Obamacare" he said to them "will make us all more taxed"
He campaigned both day and night. Coaxley just relaxed.
"The seat is mine" she smugly thought "Martha Coaxley U.S. Senator"
"I'll get to party with the president and enjoy the D.C. splendor

But something happened in the Commonwealth, and we began to dance.
Scott Brown, who no one had ever heard of, actually had a chance.
The people were upset, by the dems plans of  health care reform.
"It will only cost more money," they said "and pays to kill the unborn."

Coaxley did not panic, this election was a forgone conclusion.
That Scott Brown could win, not her, was just a Republican illusion.
Scott Brown could not win, he would need lots of luck
He has no real experience or backing and drives a pickup truck.

Closer and closer the numbers 'came with Scott Brown in the polls
"What are the people thinking" mused Coaxley "or are they really trolls?"
"I will be in Washington" she thought "of this I have no doubt."
She fell behind in the polls "Mr. President please help" she began to shout.

Old Barry came a runnin "vote for Martha" he said "is like a vote for me"
They even got Teddy's nephew, Pat, another drunken Kennedy
"Vote for Marsha" he slurred "and get me another drink"
The people were being ignored and it really made them think.

They showed up on election day, so eagerly to choose.
Without Coaxley in the Senate, Obamacare would lose.
Through wind and rain and snow, they voted in the slush.
The results poured in and the people waited, with a rather quiet hush.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout:
But there is no joy in the White House, Obamacare is out!

Brilliant! I may have to copy and share with a few particular friends! Another Crown-on-the-Rocks special?

Pam,

Yes. It struck me on the way to work yesterday. "there is no joy in Mudville" is one of my favorite sayings. I didn't know the poem was as long as it and thought it would be more of a task then it was but it was actually pretty easy. I'm just trying to give Weird Al a run for his money.

Brilliant poem! Top-Drawer! You're more optimistic about Obama-Care being dead than me, but that's okay.

I like this Scott Brown guy and hope nobody calls him a "RINO". I don't believe in using that appellation merely because someone isn't as conservative as I am.

CT,
I'm not as optimistic as the poem but had to give it a "Hollywood" ending. I like Scott Brown myself and lets always remember that few Republicans are as conservative as we are. I say that with a great deal of pride BTW.

Love this. I'm going to cut and paste and print it, if you don't mind. Let's hope for the Hollywood Ending. Because if there's one thing we all know for sure: Our rulers are slippery people.
