Happy New Year my gaggle of readers. I trust everyone woke up Saturday morning bright eyed and bushy tailed and ready to tackle 2011. It's the first Movie Clip Wednesday of the New Year. Ulitmate party host Boxer is the birth giver of this meme and we are its caretakers. Here's the gist if you may be new. I come up with a theme and post it under the MCW banner the Thursday previous (usually, anyway). You find a clip around three minutes long, come here and let us know you're up and running. We'll all stop by and have us a look see.
This week's theme is "Favorite movie set in winter". I thought I'd start us off easy. I'm sure there was more than one blogger who couldn't post every clip they wanted under "favorite Christmas movie" so here's a chance to get that clip here. Or you could be like me and have some none Christmas movies set in winter that you just love.
I could actually post a bunch here. It was really hard not to post the Cusack classic "Better off Dead" but just couldn't do it. Figured it will be there somewhere from someone. If not, well, so be it.
My first pick is "Hot Dog, the movie" as opposed I guess to hot dog the-ground-up-beef-lip-tailgate-favorite. This movie from the 1984 is flippin awesome. The classic small town boy trying to make it big on the ski circuit going against the sleezy European bad guy (no offense to my European readers, this guy is sleazy not all of you. There are sleazy Americans as well. See DC, Washington) Anyway here's the intro. No helmets. No baggy clothes. Just some good tight hot dog skiing. This movie starred David Naughton who also starred in An American Werewolf in London and was Elaine's recovering alcoholic boyfriend in the Seinfeld episode where George buys the sweater with the red dot on it. George! What a guy! It also starred 1982 Playboy Playmate of the Year Shannon Tweed who went on to do such classics as Gene Simmons from KISS.
The other movie that I love that's set in the winter is John Carpenter's The Thing. In space no one can hear you scream. Not to many people can hear you in Antartica either. I think Kurt Russell is better in this than in Escape from New York. Just my humble opinion. This is a great take on a classic. You won't find me saying that hardly ever. Especially as I haven't seen the new True Grit yet.
Happy MCW.

Hey Madman,
I'm up at "The Palais"
Nice choices both Hadn't thought about the ?Thing at all...
Hot Dog the Movie! Bwahahaha. Mr.Boxer and I used to see all of those sleazy movies in the early 80's and this was a CLASSIC. I forgot David Naughton was in it, which actually classed it up a bit.
I'm up with FARGO!
oh, ya u betcha!
Howdy MRM! Missed ya on NYE. Hope whatever y'all did wuz as much fun as what ya missed (hee hee, at least yore drinks weren't virtual)
Wishin' ya a terrific 2011!
I'll be up shortly--Boxer snagged the one that came to mind--but wasn't thar' a Rob Redford skier movie? back in his dark ages? Cain't recall fer shure--but I know thar's a James Bons wif snow somewhar'....I'se off to hunt up what came to mind.
Happy MCW

Happy MCW, MRM!
I didn't even think of Better Off Dead, which was a great movie centered around Christmas (the mom gives Lane the TV dinners for Christmas) and skiing (Do you know what the street value of this mountain is?). I vaguely remember Hot Dog but I haven't seen it in forever and it's definitely a skiing/winter movie. I did almost go with the Thing but I thought for sure I'd blogger jinx.
I'm up at the Buzzkill with a weight watcher's classic.
I'll be around later tonight to visit everyone.
Happy MCW!
Your fave sleazy European here x
Don't know either of those two movies - although I am familiar with Kurt Russell, who I very much enjoyed in Tango and Cash - but have come up with a couple of my own to tempt you :)
Your first pick is hilarious. The second one is one of my favorite horror movies and one of the few truly great remakes.
I'm up with Never Cry Wolf and will be around to everyone this PM.
Happy Movie Clip of the First Wednesday of 2011!
Good morning MRM,
Wow, that Thing doesn't look anything like the original 1951 version with James Arness. But that shouldn't surprise me.
I'm up with an arctic adventure.
Princess,
I have the Thing on DVR. It's one of those movies that makes me cold just to watch it.
Boxer,
Tracy Smith was the other female lead. Pretty nice looking gal but was only in 8 movies. Fargo? Are you going to throw in the undercoat? Or do I have to talk to Shep?
Aunty,
Had a longer night at the neighbors than expected and was having a helluva time commenting on Boxer's blog. Reading the comments gave me a sense of actually being at a really crowded and loud party which was pretty cool. My best to you and Uncle in 2011.
Buzz,
I had money on you to pick Better Off Dead. I went with the modern Thing as I thought "you know who" may go black and white with the original.
JC,
I certainly wasn't trying to offend you, Roses, 63 or anyone else. "Sleazy European" just rolled off my fingers and I couldn't take it down. I hate self censorship.
Moi,
I can't remember who told me but someone got Hot Dog for Christmas. I must remember so I can go over and watch.
Karl,
I love the original as well. I remember watching it for the first time at a condo in Whitefish on New Year's day 1988. Funny how I have this thing for remembering where I was when I saw a particular movie. Of course, a lot of people who know me wouldn't find this unusual. What's funny is I can't remember where my truck keys are 1/2 the time.
Fun choice on hot dog...never saw it, watched the clip. That kid looks like a young Dan Quayle! and of course the music is like a cheaper and worse Footloose. My nephews and nieces grew up in the 80's and i love to ridicule the music of their time.
The Thing though is pretty good. Its a great look at paranoia and not having anywhere to turn. You cant run - you'll freeze. so you have claustrophobia too. I liked it. Great pick.
im up. follow me back to ice planet Hoth.
Happy MCW!
i forgot to say:
did you know that if you use the "blogger in draft" dashboard, that under the tab "advanced" you can expand the width of your white posting area? see how much green gutter you have? it prevented you from having the movie be fully visible. you can reduce the width of those (if you want to)
K9,
Thanks for the tip. I know a couple of other's who have the same problem with the clips. You're a genius.
left ya a comment in prior post--New Year,New Mission.
Hope the discussion continues.
Thanks for the contribution to SOLVE. Master just saw comment.
porn stache! funny.
My wife proclaimed "No wonder you two get along so well" when I read her your favorites from this list. Better off Dead and Hot Dog are classics. But my favorite would have to be "Grumpy Old Men" I watched it again last night after reading this and I still laugh my ass off. Really how can you not love Burgess Meredith in this he gives the best fatherly advise you can. "Mount the woman son."
@ 5wood
The reason I know Uncle is aging is he thinks Grumpy Old Men is high art.
